Apple COVID-19 app
We came across a free and easy to navigate newly released apple iphone app (and website for those without apple products) and thought it provides a good job of distilling the numerous sources of COVID-19 information into one updated access point. The app was developed in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the White House, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). It provides three separate resources in one: best practices, screening results, and answers to frequently asked questions.
Best practices include:
Washing your hands
Social distancing
Quarantining
Monitoring your symptoms
Disinfecting surfaces
Screening tool: It has a screening tool so you can find out what you should do now for yourself or a loved one. Answer a few questions about symptoms, travel, and contact you’ve had with others and you are given an action plan recommendation.
The tool first asks about pre-existing conditions:
- asthma or chronic lung disease
- pregnancy
- diabetes with complications
- diseases or conditions that make it harder to cough
- kidney failure that need dialysis
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- weakened immune system
- congestive heart failure
- extreme obesity
Next it asks about international travel, possible exposure to areas with widespread coronavirus outbreaks, and living/working in care facilities. Then the app then analyzes your answers to see if you are experiencing symptoms, have relevant underlying medical conditions, have travelled internationally, have been to outbreak areas, have been exposed to sick people) and gives you CDC recommendations based on your answers.
The app also provides a “COVID-19 Testing” FAQ page that includes answers to:
- Who should be tested?
- How do I get tested?
- What can I expect from test results?
- What can I do while waiting for results?
An “About COVID-19” FAQ page that includes answers to:
- What is COVID-19?
- What are COVID-19’s symptoms?
- Who is at high risk for COVID-19?
- When should I see a doctor?
