Importance of Hydration for Seniors

As you we age our body composition changes and the amount of water retained in our bodies decreases.  This makes it easier to become dehydrated and makes the effects of dehydration on our health more severe.  The sensation of thirst also is diminished as we age.  This makes us not feel thirsty even when our bodies require fluids.

Causes of Dehydration

  • Not enough fluid intake is a  major cause, but many other factors can also contribute:
  • Illness- vomiting, diarrhea, fever
  • Perspiration- liquids evaporate to cool skin
  • Urination- when more liquid leaves the body than is taken in
  • Disease- Dementia and uncontrolled diabetes are two diseases that can affect our ability to stay hydrated.  Senior with dementia may forget to drink water.  Uncontrolled diabetes or being on diuretic medication may cause frequent urination.

Symptoms of Dehydration

Felling thirsty is the first sign of dehydration.  Being excessively thirsty even after drinking fluids can be a sign of moderate to severe dehydration.

Other Symptoms:

  • Dry or sticky mouth
  • Dark urine
  • Light-headedness
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Trouble keeping fluids down- vomiting/ diarrhea
  • Fatigue

How to Prevent Dehydration

There are many ways to increase fluid consumption to help from becoming dehydrated.

Drink more water.  Set reminders and keep water easily accessible.  Other drinks are suitable as well, just check for sugar and calorie content.

Eat more fresh produce. A lot of fruits and vegetables have high water content: watermelon, strawberries, peaches, cantaloupe, oranges, cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini, tomatoes, and celery.

Sip on soups and broths.  Hot and cold soups/ broths incorporated into the diet can give nutrients and increase fluid intake.  Yogurts and cottage cheeses also have high water content.

Home Care Tip

Professional in-home caregivers are a resource for keeping seniors from getting dehydrated.  Caregivers can make sure fresh water, drinks, and healthy snacks are easily accessible, as well as provide reminders on when/ how much to drink and consume.  They can also notice signs of dehydration and when medical care is necessary.
